Recording Our Spendings
When we started our world trip we made one crucial change in our life. We decided to record all of our spendings down to the penny. This has helped us know exactly where our money is going. In addition, it helps us know if we are under or over our budget. The following numbers are for 2 people. For reference we spent a total of 53 days in Ukraine.
Lodging
Our spendings on lodging were a total of $734.96 in Ukraine. Considering we were in Ukraine for a total of 53 days that’s pretty cheap. There were a few reasons for this. First of all, lodging was pretty cheap overall. Another thing which helped out was that we spent about a week helping out at a children’s camp. In addition, we spent about a week with Alex’s relatives.
Food
Food cost us a total of $951.11. This is about $18 a day. We generally ate breakfast at home, and ate out for lunch and dinner. Food was very tasty and relatively cheap. To be honest I think a full $2-3 of the daily budget was coffee since we made every effort to imbibe this delicious elixir from all the street corner stands.
Activities
Our total spending on activities was $151.92. This was things like going on tours, watching car racing with Alex’s cousin, and going to museums.
Transportation
Transportation such as taxi’s, buses, and etc. cost a total of $271.33. We used Uber and Uklon for taxi’s around the city. Ukraine also has a great train service which we used to get between cities.
Flights
We spent $283.02 on a flight into Ukraine from Kyrgyzstan (actually Kazakstan).
Shopping
We spent $310.68 on shopping in Ukraine. Because we spent more time in Ukraine we spent more money than usual on various products. In addition we bought items which we wanted to then take home since we knew we were going home soon-ish.
Health
While we were in Ukraine we decided to take advantage of the cheap prices to do some health and wellness things like get a blood test. We spent $363.77 on health related expenses in Ukraine.
Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous items are such things as laundry, bathroom costs, and other things that do not fit into a certain categorry. We spent $96.76 on miscellaneous items.
Average
We spent a total of 53 days in Ukraine. During that time we had a daily average of $59.69. This is about $22 below our budget. Considering all the things we were able to do this is quite cheap. Part of the reason we were able to spend so little is because Ukraine is pretty cheep. We used ground transportation between cities, and in general traveled slowly choosing to spend plenty of time in the cities we visited.
Takeaway
While in Ukraine we had a great time exploring the country, learning about the culture and drinking delicious coffee. We visited relatives and friends, and discovered cute little towns completely off the tourist trail. I do think though we would have had a harder time in the smaller towns if we had not known Ukrainian.
One thing that was interesting was after going to Eastern Europe and spending a few weeks there we actually ended up going back to Ukraine. We wanted to do some health procedures, as well as enjoy the cheaper prices. There’s a small town near the border called Uzhhorod which is a small, quiet, and chill spot to just unwind in.
