GRAYL
Before we set out on our world trip we started searching for a reliable and easy water filtration system to take with us. We researched, researched, researched and came upon GRAYL the answer to our long time search!
What We Love About the GRAYL Water Bottle?
What caught our attention and made the GRAYL water bottle stand out from all the rest was how easy and fast it filters water. You can literally take it to a dirty river, fill it up with water, filter it and out comes clean and good tasting water. Trust me, we’ve done it before and we were glad we had it with us. It worked like magic!
We took it to every country we traveled to and used it everywhere. Also, we brought it along on short hikes, longer backpacking trips, day tours, around the city, and even filtered water in our hotel room when we felt like it wasn’t safe. Thankfully we didn’t get sick from unclean water during our trip thanks to our awesome water-bottle.
Moreover, we saved quite a bit of money by not buying water in plastic water bottles and helped us be eco friendly.
Using GRAYL in India
We just arrived to Mumbai, India and were feeling very hungry! It was our first time in India and we were experiencing a little bit of a culture shock. We were near the train station which didn’t have many cafes or places to eat at, only busy streets full of people. Not too far from the station we found a cafe that looked a little bit run down, but still decided to give it a try.
The server filled a jug of water that looked like it wouldn’t be safe to drink. There was a sweet Indian couple sitting next to us who advised us to not drink the water. Thankfully we had our epic GRAYL water bottle with us. This might sound and have looked weird in the moment, but I poured the water from the cup, quickly filtered it and we drank it. The food ended up being delicious and was prepared well. We didn’t get sick and in the moment we were able to stay hydrated when we most needed it. If I remember correctly the temperature was in the 90’s!
What Does it Filter?
According to GRAYL the filter is able to treat for:
VIRUSES
- Rotovirus
- Norovirus
- Hepatitus A
BACTERIA
- E. coli
- Salmonella
- Dysentery
PROTOZOA
- Giardia
- Cryptosporidium
- Amoebae
PARTICULATES
- Sediment
- Silt
- Sand
CHEMICALS
- Chlorine
- Benzene
- Chloroform
HEAVY METALS
- Lead
- Arsenic
- Chromium
I have to say that I am very impressed at how well it filters! I’m pretty picky about the water I drink and how it tastes. I really don’t like chlorine and adding iodine tablets to filter water so the GRAYL water bottle was our way to go!
How Do you Filter and Purify?
It’s a ONE step purification and filtration system. Which means the bottle is ultralight and is built to take on adventures without having to carry any other filtration systems. Therefore, it filters and purifies all at the same time.
It’s very fast and easy and takes about 15 seconds to filter 16 oz of water. All you have to do is FILL the water bottle up, PRESS down, and then DRINK and ENJOY the clean water.
-
- Capacity: 16 oz (473 ml)
- Fast Flow Rate: 15 seconds per 16 oz (2 liters/minute)
- Size: 9.625″ (24.5 cm) H x 2.875″ (7.30 cm)
- Weight: 10.9 oz (309 g)
How Long Does a Purifier Cartridge Last?
The cartridge is very powerful and it’s lifespan is 300 uses (40 gal/150 L). However after 300 uses you will have to push longer and harder to get the water clean which isn’t so bad, but you’ll want to change it out eventually. When we went traveling for a whole year we brought along 4 extra cartridges with us.
The Cartridge is Made Of
Electroadsorptive Media- Helps stop pathogens and inorganic contaminants like a magnet
Ultra-Powdered Activated Carbon- Filters impurities and toxins like chemicals and heavy metals
Silver Treated Zeolites-Antimicrobial agents that keep the purifier fresh between uses

Things To Consider
Overall, its an awesome water bottle filter to take along on any trip or even day trip into the woods. The only thing that we would change is the size. The bottle holds only 16oz which isn’t all that much. It would be awesome to have something bigger and not have to filter as often but then again, would we want to carry a bigger water bottle? Probably not.
The cartridge lasts for 300 uses, that’s quite a bit and after that it will just take longer to filter. If traveling you should consider bringing an extra cartridge. The bottle and the cartridges are pretty light and fit nicely into backpacks.
Investment
If you are looking at traveling, hiking or doing any sorts of outdoor activities, this water bottle is for you! It’s not all that cheap ($59.95) but when you look at it as an investment that will last you for a long time, it’s totally worth it. You won’t have to worry about getting sick from dirty water or buying plastic water bottles when traveling.
